This is the true story of one of the first families to land in Shanghai once it was opened to British settlement and trade in 1843. With that arrival the Wade family began over 100 years of life in China.
The Author vividly describes at first hand his life in China during the latter part of the 100 years, which had begun with his great grandfather’s tea clippers and eventually ended after the gradual infiltration and invasion by Japan in the late 1930s.
This was also the age of the 'Treaty' ports, a neo-colonial system by which Western powers and Japan held 'Concessions' in Chinese cities wherein to reside and trade under their own laws and military protection. Life in the ‘Concessions’ was a unique but unequal situation; however during this time Shanghai rose from a small fishing town to a major world trading centre.
The Author describes his experiences and shares his observations whilst growing up in this unique colonial environment. To most of the Europeans and Americans who lived and worked in these Treaty ports during the last decades, life was largely pleasant and their relations with the Chinese almost universally peaceful, so that when they finally left, they did so with regret.
