Alone in the darkness, memories threaten to overwhelm him. The truth of what has happened haunts him day and night. It would be easy to let go. To forget who he was and where he came from. Easier if he didnt exist anymore at all. Every moment is a reminder of what he had and what he has lost. But there is one thing worth living for, fighting for, breathing for. He made a promise. And he intends to honour it.
Embers When darkness descends remember who you are Cage of Lies Book 2 eBook Susanne Valenti
I have to be completely honest, Embers is my least favorite of this series so far and not because it’s a bad book. It’s a great book, and I still think Susanne Valenti is awesome but it just broke my heart. I read it all in just a couple of hours because I just could NOT put it down… I cried and laughed and wanted to jump through pages and torture people!!! (you’ll understand once you read it)I’m not giving you any details so if that’s what your after you can turn around now ;) What I will tell you is this…
Embers goes back to the time during Broken, only a different place and characters are the main focus. Then they end around the same time. This kind of upset me, only because I NEED more… (Apparently I’m very impatient when it comes to the next installment in a series)
Coal is dead, okay maybe not but we all believed he was including his family. He also believed they were all dead. He had to reason to live, no reason to fight. But, for some reason he did. Now, he knows it was a good thing. This is probably my shortest and worst review yet, and I’m sorry for that. I can not give you ANY info without spoiling it all. Even if I could, you just have to trust me on this one and read it for yourself. If you haven’t yet read the whole Cage of Lies series. You won’t regret it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book via the author in exchange for an honest review. These thoughts and opinions are all mine.

Embers When darkness descends remember who you are Cage of Lies Book 2 eBook Susanne Valenti Reviews
I’m sorry but this review will have spoilers. If you have not read 1-3 in this series yet I would recommend not reading this review yet. It would be very difficult to talk about this book without a few spoilers in it because the book in itself is a spoiler if you have not read Broken.
This is novella 3.5 in the Cage of Lies series. It’s about my favorite character who we thought died in Linked. Throughout Broken Coal’s family is very… well, broken. All of them. Alicia and Maya grieve together in a dangerous way. They are both driven by revenge. They both have lost the will to live or to move on with their lives. All of the others live day by day and try not talk about what happened to Coal for fear of sending Alicia or Maya over the edge. There’s a definite tension within the group.
At the end, Alicia helps Maya sneak away from the group to find Gregor so that she can kill him. In doing so, she comes across the not so dead Coal. Hurrah! Even though they are both captives at this point. Anyway, this is a review about Embers, not Broken. If you would like to read my review of Broken just scroll down my page a little )
Anyway, Embers tells you the story of Coal. You know where he’s been, who he’s been with, and oh yeah! about how he survived being shot and almost drowning! Can I just say I am so glad Valenti wrote this novella? I have never wanted to read a novella more than this one. Coal and Kaloo are my spirit animals. I was literally jumping for joy at the end of Broken when I realized homeboy Coal was still alive. Yeah! *Fist pump*
This is a very short novella, it goes into how he was captured, the people who he interacted with in the city such as the doctor, Shank (his cellmate and unlikely friend), Gregor, Parker (his torturer), Lucretia (ugh even her name sucks, just like her personality!), etc. And how he and Maya are reunited. I loved seeing her perspective in Broken and then his in Embers. It made the moment so much sweeter.
I think this is my favorite novella ever. I was just happy when I realized Coal was alive! I haven’t been this elated since I though Glen was killed on The Walking Dead and then the next episode was like “Sike! You can’t kill Glen!” That’s exactly how awesome this felt. All feels right with the world again.
And again I am sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book to see if Maya and Coal make out of the city together and find the rest of the gang (and Kaloo too!) and if they can rescue her parents! I’m also kind of curious as to Shank… Will they all bump into each other? Will they all still be on the same side???
I give this novella 5/5 stars.

*MAJOR SPOILERS- Don't read if you haven't read book 3 of the Cage of Lies series.*
I love Coal, so I definitely needed this book in my life! Embers is a novella which tells us what happened to Coal while he was taken away. Technically he was shot, so the rest of his crew saw him die but what they didn't know was that the Governer and the wardens saved him in order to get the necessary information out of him about their mission.
I felt so bad for Coal, he was tortured so much but he never gave away anything. Yeah, technically he didn't know the actual information but he still didn't give out anything else. I love how much he's fierce and loyal to the people he loves. Although he has no know idea if they are dead or alive. I could feel his frustration and pain, everything was so vividly potrayed. And I hated that Gregor so much! But I loved the ending, it was exactly how the 3rd book ended. Now I'm much more excited to read the next book and specially eager to know how they escape and finally teach these city people a lesson because they desperately need one!
Overall, Embers was a quick and short read which I easily finished in one sitting. It was fast paced and the writing flowed smoothly. This was definitely a bit tough too read because he faced so many tortures but overall it was a good read. Everything's getting so intense and interesting, I really can't wait to read the next book!
Recommend it?
Yes.
